Waratahs forward facing ban after fracturing teammate’s eye socket in punch-up at training

Miles Amatosero is set to cop a ban from the Waratahs after the towering forward dished out five punches to new recruit Angus Scott-Young which left him with a fractured eye socket.

Both players are set to be missing from the Tahs team to face Queensland in the Super Rugby opener next month following the incident at training recently.

In two separate series of punches, Amatosero reacted aggressively after Scott-Young, the son of former Wallabies stalwart Sam Scott-Young, was tackled despite not having the ball.

Rugby Australia, which runs the Super Rugby franchise, is investigating video footage of the incident at the traning base at Daceyville before handing down its findings.

“The NSW Waratahs and Rugby Australia are aware of an incident that occurred recently during a Waratahs pre-season training session and are reviewing the matter,” an RA statement said.

After being hit by his teammate, Scott-Young grabbed Amatosero, who responded by punching him three times in the head.

When teammates stepped in to separate the feuding forwards, Scott-Young apparently gave Amatosero a spray and he landed two more blows for good measure.

He said sorry to his teammate when training finished and the Tahs had attempted to deal with the issue behind closed doors.

Scott-Young suffered a fractured eye socket and will sit out the trials with his availability for the opening round of the season on February 13 also under a heavy cloud.

Rugby Australia high-performance chief Peter Horne has reportedly interviewed the two players with his verdict expected to be announced later this week.

Amatosero remains with the pre-season squad and is in a training camp at Mudgee as the team prepares for trials against the Reds and Brumbies.

Scott-Young has joined the Tahs after a stint in the English Premiership with Northampton.
