The Roar understands Harrison, 51, who was appointed RUPA CEO in mid-2019, handed in his notice ahead of Christmas. He will officially step away from the role in the days leading up to the Super Rugby Pacific kick-off on February 13.

It’s unclear who will replace Harrison, with the role set to go to market imminently, but the role shapes as one of the most important in Australian rugby ahead of the 2027 World Cup with the new CBA to be written up.

The role will also be crucial in shaping the direction of the game, especially given the spectre of R360, the rise of women’s rugby and the direction and future of Super Rugby beyond 2030.

Harrison, who rose to prominence after pinching a match-winning lineout against the British and Irish Lions in 2001, was pivotal in ensuring the players had a seat at the table during the COVID-19 pandemic when Australian rugby was brought to its knees.

Indeed, when many sectors rolled over, the players, who took cuts to ensure the lights were kept on, managed to get back to full pay quickly as emergency measures were enacted.

Harrison also played an important role in advocating for the growth of the women’s game, with Rugby Australia investing more money and expertise in the area than ever before.

It’s believed Harrison will continue in his role as a rugby commentator for Stan Sport.
